When to Hit the Pause on Auto-Pilot Travel

The Instruction

While walking through a park in Guildford, I encountered a small wooden sign beside the trail.

It read:

PAUSE HERE

The sign offered no further clarification.

It did not specify duration, posture, or acceptable interpretation. Nevertheless, it appeared instructional rather than decorative.

I decided to comply.

Establishing the Pause

I stepped directly beneath the sign and stopped walking.

This seemed appropriate.

Travel often involves movement between destinations, and one rarely takes time to verify that the pause function is operating correctly. Standing still, therefore, felt like a useful calibration exercise.

Several walkers passed.

Most continued without comment, though one gentleman slowed slightly as if checking whether I was waiting for something.

I was not.

I wrote in my notebook:

“14:12 — pause initiated.”

Duration

Pausing is deceptively complex.

After the first minute, I began wondering whether the instruction referred to a brief reflective moment or a more structural halt. The sign had not specified.

I remained where I was.

Joggers navigated around me with mild athletic concern. A woman walking a dog glanced back twice, possibly assessing whether I had become part of the trail infrastructure.

I maintained a neutral stance to avoid influencing the experiment.

Environmental Interaction

At approximately minute four, a squirrel approached.

Squirrels are confident investigators. This one circled my left shoe, paused, and began testing the structural integrity of my shoelace.

I considered moving, but concluded that doing so would technically terminate the pause.

The squirrel continued its inspection.

I wrote:

“14:17 — wildlife engagement.”

Operational Limits

Eventually, the shoelace situation required intervention.

I stepped backward, which formally concluded the pause period. The squirrel retreated with professional disappointment.

Several nearby walkers appeared relieved that the human obstacle had resumed standard functionality.

Reclassification

I continued along the path toward the viewpoint.

The remainder of the walk proceeded without further signage instructions.

In retrospect, the pause appears to have functioned successfully. The world continued operating during my stationary interval, and my shoelaces remain mostly intact.

I suspect the sign was intended to encourage reflection.

However, it also serves effectively as a reminder that standing completely still in the middle of a public trail for several minutes will attract both wildlife and mild administrative concern.

Should I encounter the sign again, I will pause.

Possibly slightly to the side of the path.
